History of Cobras
The big block Shelby Cobra is considered by many to be the most iconic American sports car
in history.
When GM began to work on a new big block Corvette and Ferrari increased the power of the
V12 powered GTO’s, Shelby and Ford Motor Company decided to shoehorn the mighty 427 FE
motor into the Cobra.
To fit the 427 into his Cobra, Carroll Shelby completely redesigned the frame, body and
chassis. Shelby developed a new independent suspension, fortified the frame to handle the
increase in torque and modified the body to fit bigger wheels and tires.
Original Cobras was made from 1965 to 1967 and in that period Shelby produced 348 copies.
The original Cobra 427’s are one of the most sought after and expensive classic cars, often
cherished and preserved by their owners. The prices are well over 1 million dollars for a
perfect example, but original Cobras rarely are for sale.
Shelby American resumed the production of the 427 S/C csx 4000 series in 1997 with the
original blueprints and measures. Continuation cars are still made with fiberglass or
aluminium.
Rolling polished aluminium chassis is priced 372 000 dollars. Customer then adds engine and
gearbox.
History of my car csx4881
In 2007 Canadian company Sean Hyland Motorsport bought a rolling Shelby Cobra CSX and
started to make it a unique one with 1000hp.
Sean was the first outside USA authorized Shelby mod shop. Combined with mad scientists it
is easy to understand why it got itch to see what a modified 5.4L Mustang GT500 powertrain –
including its Tremec TR6060 six speed – could do in one Shelby’s venerable two-seaters.
And so the surgery began.
First Sean replaced the iron block to company’s own aluminium version PN SHMRB-2
knocking out 100 pounds in the process.
The stock supercharger was abandoned in favor of a Kenne Bell « Mammoth » twin-screw
blower kit, displacing 2.8 litres of air with every revolution, while breathing through inlet
hardware of unparalleled airflow capacity.
Fitting the engine to the cobra was not the hardest problem.
Challenge was in the tranny tunnel and firewall area, thanks to the substantial girth of the
modular’s bellhousing section. This required reworking the belly pan to significantly widen the
tunnel and, as a result, the pedal assembly was shifted about 4 inches outboard, making the
driving position that takes a little getting used to.
Obviously, custom engine and transmission mounts had to be fabricated, as did a shifter and
a complete header system connecting exhaust ports to the stock CSX side pipes. The overall
length of powertrain resulted in a driveshaft that is only about a foot length – a good 8 inches
shorter.
And taught a stock-style oil pan might have been modified to work, Sean instead opted for a
race-style, billet dry-sump system, with its reservoir tank housed in the trunk.
On E85, Sean was able to run as much as 23 psi, a result of both the alcohol’s higher-octane
rating as well as its natural cylinder cooling tendencies. This result in the aforementioned
1000hp and 925 lb-ft on the brake dyno.
Incidentally, a recalibrated GT500 processor is used to run everything, with suitable
alternations to the wiring harness.
Car was ready to be shown in 2008 SEMA show as a star of SHM.
With only 500hp, the original 427 Cobras had deserved reputations of being more than a
handful to keep pointed in the right direction. With about double that power on tap when 42-
gallon fuel cell is topped with E85, SHM’s Cobra has the irascible disposition a modern-day
Super Snake with an alcohol addition.
After Sema show 2009 this Cobra was a star in Finland, American Car Show, where I saw it
first time.
My friend had helped to get the car to Europe show tour and even to St Petersburgh. I had
previous history with Sean Hyland when he rebuilt my 1967 Shelby G.T.500 and also with help
of getting some parts to my track Mustang Cobra SVT.
I could not get my eyes out of this Cobra and had to ask if it would be for sale.
Answer was yes after the tour.
So deal was made and car moved into my garage 2009.
My driving history
After 2009 car only went to few car shows is Finland. 2 track days with it.
Power was insane, as I have named it widowmaker.
I started a process to get the licence plate and registered it as 1966 Shelby Cobra S/C 427.
Took 3 years of paperwork but I finally did it! Car has a plate SC-66, black as a sign of on old
car.
2014 I was asked to take part of Gumball 3000 road trip with this Cobra. Little bit of thinking
how could I manage with car without a roof from Edinburgh to Ibiza.
Answer was motorcycle clothes with a helmet and intercom system with a co-driver. Shelby
Cobra was wrapped matt black with gold stripes as my sponsor was Battery Energy Drink.
June we took it to trailer and drove to Edinburgh, UK.
Gumball started and Cobra was a star with the insane sound of straight side pipes blowing
flames.
Listed for sale
I have drove Cobra now 3798 kilometers. Car runs great and turns heads everywhere. It has been a star of many car shows in Finland.
It is now ready for new home.
Price include delivery to it’s new home anywhere in Europe by myself.
It is ready for the roads or the car shows. Last maintainance has been done this month so new owner will just enjoy driving it.
In Finland we still have some nice autumn days for a test drive. Book a flight and come see it in our Garage with some other interesting Shelby cars.
Travel cost will be payed if deal is made.
